The author steps out of the investor perspective and asks what the cryptographic system he has been following for four years is actually built on. The answer requires a representative: Ethereum, the first programmable Layer 1, measured against the research question of whether its architecture meets the requirements of fundamental digital infrastructure.

Chapter 1 Introduction

Ethereum is called infrastructure — by consulting firms, regulators, and institutional investors. A standard for this claim has never been established. The study identifies the gap, states the research question, and answers it twice: for the current state and for the state that full roadmap implementation would produce.

Chapter 2 Theoretical Framework and Methodology

What makes infrastructure fundamental? The study derives twelve criteria from infrastructure theory, organises them into three dimensions, and documents the evaluation procedure in full.

Chapter 3 Infrastructure Contextualization

The twelve criteria are tested against seven established infrastructures: the power grid, the internet, road networks, SWIFT, GPS, cloud infrastructure, and the legal system. What a criterion does not survive here is discarded.

Chapter 4 Current State Assessment — Ethereum in Operational State Q1 2026

How does Ethereum perform against the twelve evaluation criteria in operation? This chapter delivers the current-state assessment — the baseline for the target-state comparison.

Chapter 5 The Target State

What would Ethereum become if its roadmap were fully implemented? The study describes the target state, evaluates it against the same twelve criteria, and arrives at a target-state assessment.

Chapter 6 Delta, Limits, and Overall Assessment

The gap between the current and the target state, the persistent limits of the system, and the limits of the evaluation framework itself. The chapter answers the research question.

Chapter 7 Implications

What does the assessment mean for those who build on the system, trust it, or regulate it? The final chapter steps outside the evaluative role and traces the consequences of the answer.
